how does egg freezing work?
It’s simpler than you think. You won’t need to put your life on hold. There are 4 steps, all of which will take place over one “cycle,” which usually lasts between 12 and 15 days:
Speak to a fertility specialist from our network of leading fertility clinics and get a full fertility assessment that includes some bloodwork and an ultrasound to check your ovaries.
You’ll do between 9 and 11 days of medication injections to stimulate your ovaries to produce extra eggs. You’ll also visit your doctor 3 to 5 times to see how your eggs are developing and adjust your medication as needed.
The last step is a 15-minute procedure to collect the eggs from your ovaries. You’ll be under general anaesthesia, so you won’t feel anything. Most women can go back to work the next day.

Do I really need to do this? Don’t lots of women have babies later in life?
Many women do have healthy babies in their late 30s and early 40s, but getting pregnant at that age often isn’t easy. Your fertility declines quickly after 35. You have far fewer eggs, and the ones that are left often aren’t baby quality. This means your chances of getting pregnant during any given month are much lower than in your 20s. Also, when you do get pregnant with older eggs, the chances of complications are higher—you’re more likely to miscarry or have a baby with a chromosomal abnormality.
Your eggs are still healthy and gorgeous when you’re in your 20s and early 30s—ideal for baby-making! It’s a great time to freeze your eggs so you have the best chance at a healthy baby if and when you’re ready. Remember, conceiving with a young, frozen egg is often easier than trying to conceive naturally when you are older. -

I’m so busy right now—do I have time for egg freezing? Isn’t it a big deal?
Egg freezing is a reasonably quick process that you can easily fit into your life. Over the course of 12 to 15 days, you’ll make three to five clinic visits for testing and monitoring, and you’ll give yourself daily medication injections. The egg collection itself is only a 15-minute procedure administered under general anaesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing, and you can go back to work the next day.

Does egg freezing guarantee I can have a baby later?
Nothing about our fertility is a sure thing—we wish it were. According to the Center for Fertility Research and Education, on average, a 35-year-old-woman who has frozen 10 eggs has about a 70% chance of conceiving a baby with those eggs. Of course, that number varies based on your age. Two things will improve your chances: Freezing more eggs and freezing younger eggs. For an answer that is customised to you and your unique situation, we suggest a fertility assessment.

I see. What’s an egg freezing consultation?
An egg freezing initial consultation is a consultation where the fertility doctor will do an examination and an ultrasound. A blood panel is often done to check for your TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), Prolactin, and AMH (anti-mullerian hormone), all of which tell your doctor about your egg supply and ovarian function. The ultrasound lets your doctor get a closer look at your ovaries—specifically, the number of follicles in each. A follicle is a tiny, fluid-filled sac in your ovary that contains a developing egg. Fewer follicles usually mean you’ll produce fewer eggs, and more follicles usually mean you’ll produce more eggs.
